Child Who Had Lice
Learn how summer birds brought back the seasons to our world in the story of the Child Who Had Lice, abandoned because he had so many lice. In his loneliness, he thinks he sees Atshein, but it is actually his grandfather, the giant Mitshapeu. Mitshapeu leaves him some skin and a lantern so that he will have everything he needs. The child then finds his parents with Mitshapeu. At his grandson’s request, Mitshapeu stays with the family and becomes human-sized. The child goes hunting for his grandfather and feeds him caribou lungs. The mother then begins to harbor bad thoughts towards Mitshapeu, which prompts him to leave the family.
